Pink Lovers is part of a series of double portraits created after Chagall's marriage to Bella Rosenfeld, probably in the summer of 1916, during their stay at the dacha rented by the artist. The series, which Chagall named Dedicated to my Wife, is based on different color shades—for example The Gray Lovers [Les Amoureux en gris] (1916 - 1917), and The Green Lovers [Les Amoureux en vert.
