As evidence, here's my personal Greatsword. I had to put my foot in the frame (US 12 Men's) for scale. It's close to 6ft in length- which means hitting a target 10ft away is much, much easier than hitting a target 5ft adjacent to me. Greatswords can have Reach- but only if the players specify what sword they carry .
