Pickett Butte is an active fire lookout and will be staffed by Forest Service personnel during daylight hours for situations critical to the district. Amenities: The 12' x 12' one-room lookout is furnished with a single bed, and a small table and chair, and is equipped with a propane heater, lanterns, cooking stove with oven and a refrigerator (propane is provided).

Mattress is surprisingly comfortable, fridge and oven/stove work very well. We only had phone reception when in the tower. Phone Carrier: T-Mobile.

We stayed at Pickett Butte fire lookout in Southwestern Oregon, located in Umpqua National Forest. Pickett Butte served well for a winter fire lookout stay because of its relatively low elevation of 3,200 feet; while it sits at the highest rise in the surrounding forest and towers three steep stories into the air, it usually is accessible in all seasons.

On the drive down off the butte we passed Lori, the lookout we'd met at Acker Rock the day before. Pickett Butte is always staffed starting about mid-July, but due to the high fire danger she was being sent up to our lookout for the day to keep any eye on the area. Good thing we hadn't planned on hanging out up there during the day!

The lookout has a heavy metal door that opens onto the catwalk. Please use caution when opening and closing this door, and keep the door closed while in the lookout. Watch children closely at all.
